WHAT ROAD ARE YOU ON?
What road?

INTRODUCTION

This article is one of many faith, inspiration and empowerment foundational articles on this site. For more faith-based empowerment articles see collection here.

Something is happening every moment of our lives. We are perpetually inside a moving and continuous sequence of events, and things that move are always moving away from one point and toward another like a vehicle on the road or a person walking along a path. So that begs the question - what road or path are you on? Which begs the further questions of - What are you moving towards? And, what are you moving away from?

In order to answer this question it's important to understand the available roads that exists and see if we can extract any information about possible known endings. We begin with a simple definition of 'road' which in the context here is defined:

A route or way to an end, conclusion, or circumstance

For the purposes of this discussion let's rephrase our question to: What ROUTE are you on? And, which END or CONCLUSION is known to be associated with that route or path?

The question forces you to exit the minute-by-minute limited, often emotion or sensory-based reality and look to a more deeply thought-out bigger picture of your life, behavior and thus your true trajectory or path in life.

In order to look at this bigger picture one must then focus on what the END or CONCLUSION looks like. That's right, if you don't know what the end looks like, then by definition you don't know what road you are on. And if you don't know what road you are on, then you are LOST by definition, and this is the article for you!

THE PROPER TOOLS

For the sake of simplicity, let's label the road you are on POINT A, and the conclusion or end result POINT B. We see then, in this construct we must know and understand point B in order to have clear knowledge of what point A is.

In order to build a house, start a business, write a book or build any entity you obviously need the right tools. In order to do their job, for example, a plumber or carpenter needs the right tools, and without these tools they probably don't get hired for the job. Tools are important, so let's start answering this question (what road are you on?) with some amazing tools that only God can offer.

The Bible tells us in 2 Chronicles 1:11-12 that because King Solomon asked for wisdom and not riches and wealth God blessed him with more wisdom than any man has ever had:

Then God said to Solomon: “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king - wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.”

In this passage notice the last part where it says “nor shall any AFTER you have the like”. This tells us that to this day, no one has been blessed with more wisdom than Solomon. How beautiful and gracious of God to bless Solomon with wisdom so that he can share that gift with us.

If there's a pattern to be found here it would be that God in His love and kindness always gives blessings and gifts to an obedient person so that they can then bless others with that gift, not keep the blessings to themselves. Solomon's wisdom is a great example, and he would go on to bless all of us by putting these tools of wisdom in writing for us to quote and live by today.

I also think it's interesting that God put His wisdom "toolbox" (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes) in the center of the Bible almost as if knowing that unbelievers are more likely to open up and read the center of the book first (?)... just speculating. Given that the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation is about the revelation of Jesus Christ, it would seem proper to put the wisdom “accelerant” in the center. The wisdom and knowledge that reveals the character of God and how to best psychologically align yourself with it. These are just some personal thoughts and speculations.

END RESULT DEFINED

We know from God's wisdom given to Solomon to give to us that a person who puts their trust in God WILL succeed, and those who don't put their trust in God in every single thing they do WILL fail.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. - Proverbs 3:5-7.

In this one tiny passage, in the sea of knowledge and wisdom given to us by God through Solomon, we see that if God is not your absolute focus, whether it's a simple or difficult situation, you will end up in the wrong place every time. Proverbs 21:21 tells us (emphasis added):

Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness WILL find life, righteousness, and honor.

There are no examples in the scriptures of life ending well for those pursuing their own selfish desires. This paints a clear picture to the conclusion or end for anyone who truly believes, trusts and obeys God's Word. For those who don't, that's because they have put their trust in themselves. The “trust thyself” philosophy which drives secular humanism and today's New Age movement (which is repackaged gnosticism), is a stark contrast to trusting God and guarantees failure in the end.

Later, Jesus would also dispense priceless knowledge and wisdom to those with ears to hear, with His precious parables which contain the secrets to the kingdom. Also, in the beatitudes, another rich toolbox of knowledge and wisdom, Jesus would tell us (Matthew 5:6,8)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Also, Mathew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

So, the question of: What road you are on? - Depending on your perspective, could be a simple question with a clear answer. How the road you are on concludes or where that road leads to, can only be fully evaluated by looking at the ending from a biblical perspective.

While mankind without God looks at the bank account, the possessions, the societal position, the popularity, power or societal influence, the true end (objectively speaking) cannot be counterfeited (i.e. theorized, spoken, wished or dreamed into existence) because there's only ONE of its kind.

ARE YOU LOST?

So, perhaps the question should've been: do you know what defines the true end of your road? Or: Do you know the exact location of your final destination? - Either way, you get the point. If you don't know where you are going, then you don't know what road you are on. Which by definition means you are lost.

The good news is, this is precisely the reason Jesus died for you and I. He came so that those who are lost can find the coordinates of the correct, intended and proper destination, which then gives meaning and purpose to the road that you are on, not the other way around. Man defines his road without understanding the final destination.

In His Word, God defines the destination to give meaning to your road, which includes your decisions, your experience, your day-to-day struggles that make up your journey. All the tools and guidance needed to submit the answer to the question are now in. That is, for those with ears to hear and eyes to see. Can you see and hear?
